About the Associated Students of UCSD (ASUCSD)

The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. The ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. The ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service in order to build and strengthen our community.

About the AVP Local Affairs

The AS Office of Local Affairs functions primarily to bring together the communities of UCSD and the greater San Diego area. The Associate Vice President of Local Affairs will continue to collaborate with SPACES and the AS External Affairs Office in order to expand the UCSD Lobby Corps. By focusing on local events and institutions of social, political, and environmental importance, the Office of Local Affairs aims to forge a two-way relationship between students and local leaders. The Office of Local Affairs facilitates student awareness and involvement as well as local legislative accountability. The Office of Local Affairs works to engage in community outreach by initiating programs, campaigns, and development projects that bring together members of the UCSD and greater San Diego communities. The Office shall facilitate communication between students, administrators, local legislators, and community members to enact and sustain programs and projects that work to address local: political, social, indigenous, and economic issues. The Office ensures that students have the ability to voice their opinions to the San Diego City Council, state representatives, and work on local matters that are of concern. The office concerns itself with increasing accessibility to UCSD. The main goal of the office is to Increase the presence of UCSD in the surrounding community while improving student awareness and advocacy.

Responsibilities

  • Increase the visibility of UCSD in the surrounding community
  • Raise local legislative awareness and responsibility
  • Cultivate a relationship with the Graduate Student Association, AS External Affairs, AS Campus Affairs, and local legislators.
  • Shall manage and provide curatorial direction to the Office of Local Affairs
  • Shall appoint and oversee all Local Affairs staff positions which include the Chief of Staff, Intercollegiate/City Council Affairs Director, Tribal Government Affairs Director and Local Affairs Office Interns.
  • Shall coordinate with Legislative Liason on ASUCSD Triton Lobby Corps to further mobilize TLC with undergraduate student body membership
  • Shall act as the liaison between the ASUCSD and the San Diego City Council and its representatives

  • Shall act as the primary liaison between the ASUCSD and the other San Diego universities, colleges, and other centers for higher education in order to engage these entities in campaigns set forth by the External Affairs office
  • Shall act as the primary liaison between the ASUCSD and the San Diego Tribal Governments

  • Shall act as the primary liaison between the ASUCSD and San Diego community based organizations which may include, but are not limited to, San Diego Education Consortium, the California Fund for Youth Organizing San Diego Youth Chapter, San Diego City Council’s 4th District Youth Advisory Board, the Coalition of Neighborhood Councils, and Association of Raza Educators (ARE)
  • Shall work alongside the Campus Organizing Director(s) to engage student body in campaigns for higher education and alongside Graduate Student Association for collaborative initiatives on higher education funding
  • Coordinate a self-initiated access project during fall, winter, and spring quarter
  • Prepare and present reports and presentations as necessary to Associated Students and other campus entities in regards to higher education campaigns and projects, as well as the state of relevant San Diego County affairs
  • Coordinate programming that increases the accessibility of San Diego resources to UC San Diego students, and coordinate with other student organizations already working on higher education accessibility and diversity retention programs to formalize a program
  • Shall organize visits by local governmental representatives to UCSD to speak with students on issues of higher education and work with the director of Student Organized Voter Access Committee (SOVAC) in promoting student knowledge on the upcoming 2016 Primaries
  • Collaborate with the SPACES Director of Local Affairs and Co-Director of Statewide Affairs to coordinate, at minimum, one lobby visit per quarter to a local representative, regarding issues of educational equity, access and retention in higher education
  • Attend all AS Council meetings (Every Wednesday beginning at 3:00pm) to provide regular updates to the Council regarding events as well as regular meetings with the Vice President of External Affairs
