About the Associated Students of UCSD (ASUCSD)

The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. The ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. The ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service in order to build and strengthen our community.

About the AVP of Environmental Justice Affairs

The purpose of the Environmental Justice Affairs Office shall be to raise awareness and promote action towards addressing the intersections of environmental and social justice within the student body. The Office of Environmental Justice Affairs will focus on elements of environmental and social sustainability inherent in council decisions and at the university. It is expected that the officer to fill this position will contribute additional knowledge and foresight on matters regarding sustainability and will hence have a direct positive effect on the impact ASUCSD has on campus, around San Diego, and in the international community.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the office and all operations within the office.
  • Attend Council meeting (starting Wednesdays at 3pm).
  • Shall conduct at least three projects or programs each year that either support sustainability efforts on campus and/or that make ASUCSD more sustainable. The AVP shall coordinate these programs with corresponding or appropriate positions on college councils.
  • Give an annual report on ASUCSD's sustainability practices and recommend changes.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Student Sustainability Collective and AS council.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of The Green Initiative Fund and Sustainability Resource Center board meetings.
  • Attend four UCSD sustainability organizations' meetings per month.
  • Meet monthly with the Sustainable Programming Office's Sustainability Analyst
  • Serve on the UCSD Earth Week Committee in Winter quarter and put together a project during Earth Week on behalf of AS.
  • Maintain communication with the Real Food Challenge, and have a delegate serve on their weekly conference calls.
  • Hold quarterly meetings with the University Centers Sustainability Coordinator
  • Hold quarterly meetings with the Housing Dining and Hospitality Sustainability Manager.
  • Hold quarterly meetings with college council positions pertaining to environmental and/or social justice issues.
  • Shall appoint and oversee all Environmental Justice Affairs staff positions.
