Call-In Day of Action--Demand Justice For Domestic Workers
|
Press Conference: 12pm at the Silent Tree State-Wide Call-in: 11am-4pm on library walk and in all the colleges Join 9 UC campuses state-wide urging CA senators to support the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, a bill known as Assembly Bill 889. There will be a Press Conference at UC San Diego and a state-wide call in urging CA Senators to pass Assembly Bill 889. Workers have fought on the behalf of students and now it's time to mobilize students to stand in solidarity with domestic workers. This bill aims to do the following: 1) Specially regulate the wages, hours, and working conditions of domestic work employees, as defined. Specifically this bill would provide a private right to action for a domestic work employee when those regulations are violated by his/her employer and provide an overtime compensation rate for domestic work employees. Would provide these new provisions prevail over protections in that order or any other law that afford less protection to a domestic work employee. 2) Deletes the exclusion of employers of domestic workers from providing specified information regarding their wages. 3) Removes the exclusion of domestic workers and requires all domestic work employers to secure the payment of workers’ compensation and would make conforming changes. Why is this IMPORTANT?! Domestic workers have historically been exploited because they DO NOT have basic worker rights. These domestic workers are composed of mainly undocumented women and they are politically, socially and economically vulnerable, which sets up for a significant amount of labor violations. This bill will eradicate discriminatory policies and PROTECT domestic workers so they are finally treated FAIRLY and are given the rights that they DESERVE. Join us in calling for the passage of this historic legislation. Make a difference in less than 10 minutes! P.S when you make a call, you get a FREE slice of pizza! ;) For more information about AB 889 and Call-In Day of action check out: cadomesticworkers.org UCSD Contact for more information: The Office of External Affairs Lilianne Tang (Co-COD) - liliannetang@gmail.com Bruno Huizar (Co-COD) - brunohzr@gmail.com |
