Voter Registration 2008 Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need to reregister when I have moved? Yes. You must fill out a voter registration card every time you move or change addresses (also, whenever you change your name or political party affiliation).
  2. How do I know if I'm registered? A confirmation card for your voter registration should arrive in three weeks of mailing your card. If it doesn't arrive in three weeks, call the San Diego County Registrar (Toll-free: 1-800-696-0136) and give them the number on your receipt (the torn off bottom portion of the registration card). You can also fill out another card just to be sure.
  3. Is there a penalty for registering too many times? No. If you're unsure if you're registered, just fill out another card. There is no penalty for filling it out as many times as you must until you definitely have your confirmation card in your hand.
  4. Can't I just register to vote online? No. Your physical signature is needed on an actual registration form.
  5. Why should I register to vote in San Diego? Registering to vote is the first step in getting civically involved in the community. As someone who will be living in San Diego for the next two to five years, you have a responsibility to vote for representatives in the district you are now living in. Practically, it is much more sensible to register where you are living. You will be able to vote on campus or within a reasonable distance from your house; and let's just be real - you probably aren't going to drive home on a Tuesday in order to vote. Absentee ballots need to be separately requested by an earlier deadline than the overall voter registration deadline, as well.
  6. But I'm politically involved at home. You should still fill out the registration form and change your mailing address to your San Diego address, in order to ensure receiving your absentee ballot.
  7. How do I get an absentee ballot? When changing your address on the voter reg card, check the Permanent Absentee box and initial on the blank line. An absentee ballot will be sent automatically every election, but if not returned in two consecutive statewide elections, Permanent Absentee status will be cancelled.
  8. I don't want to list my contact information because I'm afraid it will be taken for commercial use. It is illegal to use any contact info from voter registration for any commercial use and you can be assured that you will never be contacted via information collected from your registration card except for matters pertaining solely to voting on Election Day.
  9. When does my registration card need to be turned in? Your card must be postmarked within three days of being signed and dated. In case of mistakes, we ask that after signing and filling out your information, you leave the date blank and turn your card in to the A.S. External Affairs Office so we can double check that all the necessary information is on the card, contact you if something is missing, and mail it for you. You save a stamp and won't have any mistakes! Again, we will never contact you for anything that is not directly related to elections and your voting rights.
  10. When I register to vote, do I need to affiliate with any political party? Not unless you want to. You have the option of registering as a "decline to state" (nonpartisan) voter. For the November election, your political party affiliation, if any, does not matter. Because this is a general election, all voters in a precinct will receive the same ballot, regardless of each voter's party affiliation.
  11. How do I know where to go to vote? Your assigned polling place will be listed on the back of the sample ballot booklet, which you will receive in the mail approximately one month prior to the election. You can also call the Registrar's office at 858-565-5800 and follow the prompts or you can check online by going to www.sdvote.com and entering the requested data.
