Jovonne Lee

Out-of-State AS Senator

Hello! I'm Jovonne Lee and I will be serving as your Out of State Senator for this school year. I'm currently a fourth year, Sixth college student and I am studying General Biology. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and I love the outdoors! My goal is to be the voice for out of state students and to find solutions to challenges regarding the out of state student experience here at UCSD - whether it is about tuition, housing during long breaks, or becoming more familiar with California culture. I currently serve on the UC SHIP Committee and the Wellness-Cluster Student Advisory Board on campus.

Outreach Hour

I spoke to the ISSA (International School Student Association) about coming to my future programs and projects. Also spoke to them about possible meetings/ GBMS I can speak at and ask for their experiences as an out-of-state/ international senator.

Senator Project Updates

I finalized the final budget for the Valentine's Day card program next month. Following that, I worked on the Senator Funds request, as well as the TAP form. I am thinking about extending the program and using the extra supplies to have card-making out on library walk the following day of the event. For my second senator project, I am trying to find a way to host a program during the 3-day weekend, possibly collaborating with Outreach Coordinators or college ambassadors to have a joint program.

UCSHIP committee: I sit on the UCSHIP committee and we discuss the UCSHIP health plan for students and changes in benefits and policies. They are asking if anyone or anyone’s constituents have a benefit they want to be introduced or changes in the UCSHIP benefits, like if they don’t want a copay on for a certain item or service, for next school year. They are making decisions on changes for the UCSHIP plan for the 2020-2021 school year this March and would like to introduce any proposals or changes in their upcoming meetings in January and February. For UCSHIP on the UC-wide level, they are proposing changes in international claims, gender facial reconstruction surgery, as well as psychoeducational testing. As for the UCSD UCSHIP proposals, they are introducing a fee for X-rays, as well as no co-pay for LiveHealth Online (as it is $10 right now). They may also introduce a $10 co-pay for office visits requiring a Physician/ Nurse Practioner, but it will most likely not be approved as it could discourage students from seeking help when they are sick.

Summary

I spoke with an outside organizations that specifically reaches out to international/ out of state students. I also worked on my upcoming senator project, as well as brainstorming for my second one. For my external committee, they are in the process of submitting proposals for changes in the UCSHIP benefits and requests that any other changes or proposals be discussed in later meetings of the quarter.
