First Year AS Senator
Hello! My name is Ella McLaren (she/her/hers) and I am honored and excited to be serving as one of your First Year Senators this school year. I am a first year molecular and cell biology major on the pre-med track. My goals for this year are to increase resources for First Year students and to advocate for policy changes that will benefit my constituents in their first year here at UCSD. I am passionate about social and environmental justice and am very excited to work for the UCSD student body this year as a proponent of equity, inclusion, and justice. I host weekly office hours on Fridays during the academic year from 6-7pm PST along with my co-senator Will Wei. Feel free to stop by if you have any concerns, questions, or ideas or simply to say hi and get to know me and my goals for this year a bit more!
I am continuing to host weekly office hours for my constituents every Friday of the academic year from 6-7pm PST. I am also in the process of creating a First Year Senators Instagram page to help increase outreach and provide up-to-date information to first years.
Senator Project Updates
I am in the midst of planning a project aimed at addressing the unique experience of first year students this year as well as increase their awareness of the resources available to them to succeed at UCSD. I am also working alongside Senators Pandya and Ying on a project led by Senator Shen to improve communication skills among pre-med and pre-health students.
Legislative Committee did not have any items to pass since the quarter is coming to an end, but we did have a discussion on the Human Rights Committee Charter sponsored by Senator Lam.
This committee did not meet this week.
I held my weekly office hours with Senator Wei on Friday the 8th from 6pm-7pm PST so that any of my constituents who had questions, ideas, or concerns could pop in to talk.
Senator Project Updates
I continued working independently on my first year student geared Senator project and am excited to announce it to the Senate in the coming weeks. I hope to have the project up and running by week 5 of winter quarter at the very latest, but week 4 should be a more realistic target.
I also created an Instagram page this week for first year students because I feel it has the potential to engage many more students on a much more regular basis than the First Year Senator Facebook page currently is. The account is: @asucsdfirstyearsenators https://www.instagram.com/asucsdfirstyearsenators/
Legislative Committee did not have any items to vote on since it was the start of a new quarter. Instead, there was discussion on various future items not yet ready for making motions on.
The Fellowship met on Friday the 8th as a welcome back session. Unfortunately I could not attend because the time conflicted with my previously scheduled office hours. However, there will not be a timing conflict in future weeks.
This week was focused around communication and increasing connections between myself, my colleagues, and my constituents. I am very eager to have my project up and running to benefit my constituents during their first year here at UCSD, and will be providing more updates soon.
Once again I held office hours on for my constituents to attend on Friday at 6pm PST.
I also kept our new First Year Senators instagram page up to date with a few new posts and stories.
Senator Project Updates
I am launching a new project targed toward first year students at UCSD. The initiatve will create a weekly podcast tentatively named 'FYI-First Year Information'. My goal with this podcast is to invite panelists on to speak about a different broad topic each week and answer student questions. The topics of each week will be related to the experience of first year students and the panelists will help educate first years as well as remind them that they are not alone during this time- we all are doing our best to figure out the world around us each day. I presented my project idea to the Senate this week and also took that time to ask for volunteers to serve as panelists for my podcast. I am very pleased with the responses I have gotten about the podcast so far. My timeline goal is to have the first episode of FYI published week 5 of winter quarter.
Legislative Committee discussed and voted on item L1 'Increasing Transparency in our Hiring Procedures: Standing Rules Amendment for Executive Officer and AVP Hiring' Sponsored by Hannah Kreitman. This piece of legislation ultimately passed.
Fellowship met on Tuesday the 12th and held a presentation about Imposter Syndrome, its effects, and ways to deal with it. It was a very informative presentation that also allowed time for peer-to-peer discussion on the subject.
This week things began to pick up again as we moved farther into winter quarter. My main focus these next few weeks will be to continue working on my Senator Project so that it can be launched in a timely manner and start making a difference in the lives of first year students.
