About the Associated Students of UCSD (ASUCSD)

The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. The ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. The ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service in order to build and strengthen our community.

About the Office of External Office: Student Organized Voter Access Committee

SOVAC is a non-partisan student organization which seeks to increase voter registration rates in the UCSD community, facilitate a positive discussion about voting, and encourage voter turnout. SOVAC performs these services by being the primary representative for voter registration, holding informational workshops, executing a non-partisan advertising campaign, and collaborating with other student groups.

Goals and Projects for 2016-17

  • Organize over summer for registering students to vote during UCSD move-in days
  • Educate students on candidates, platforms, and initiatives and legislation that affects students and higher education
  • Integrate with the local community (e.g. UCSD, La Jolla area high schools, local businesses, etc.) in order to continue expansion of voter registration campaigns.
  • Strategize for an efficient and far-reaching voter registration campaign in a general election year.
  • Increase visibility among UCSD students, faculty and staff.
  • Gain legitimacy in the UC System, and export SOVAC's strategies to other UC's.
  • Provide Triton Lobby Corps with increased membership and political capital for lobbying visits

Open Staff Positions for the Office of External Office: Student Organized Voter Access Committee

Community Director

  • Work with student organizations working on election engagement and voter registration, and keep relations with political student orgs on campus such as College Democrats and College Republicans
  • Organize over summer student voter registration during move-in days, keeping in contact with college deans
  • Serve on the Executive Board of the Committee, and make decisions that shape it's future plans and goals.
  • Specialize in building and maintaining relationships with community organizations (UC, La Jolla, Greater San Diego).
  • Moderate the interactions between SOVAC and community organizations, ensuring that SOVAC stays true to its mission statement and charter.
