About the Associated Students of UCSD (ASUCSD)

The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. The ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. The ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service in order to build and strengthen our community.

About the Office of Local Affairs

The Office of Local Affairs works to engage in community outreach by initiating programs, campaigns, and development projects that bring together members of the UC San Diego and greater San Diego communities. The Office facilitates communication between students, administrators, local legislators, and community members to enact and sustain programs and projects that work to address local: political, social, and economic issues. The Office ensures that students have the ability to voice their opinions to the San Diego City Council, state representatives, and work on local matters that are of concern. The office concerns itself with increasing accessibility to UCSD. The main goal of the office is to increase the presence of UC San Diego in the surrounding community while improving student awareness and advocacy.

Goals and Projects for 2016-17

  • Advocate for a safe environment for social activism by opposing the militarization of police and local law enforcement as well as the school-to-prison pipeline and mass incarceration
  • Raise local legislative awareness and responsibility to civic engagement and public service
  • Network with other institutions of higher learning and engage the greater San Diego community with issues that are pertinent to students attending the institutions of higher education, including but not limited to the University of San Diego, California State University, San Marcos, San Diego State University, and other community colleges
  • Collaborate with the Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Service and the Office of External Affairs in order to increase student involvement with outreach and retention efforts as well as professional development opportunities
  • Fabricate connections with the surrounding San Diego community by fostering relationships with community organizations
  • Increase the visibility of UC San Diego in collaboration with the San Diego community centers and other entities

Open Staff Positions for the Office of Local Affairs

Executive Director of Programs, Operations, and Events

  • Shall serve as the first line of defense to any needs that emerge from the Office of Local Affairs including its archives and its Directors
  • Shall provide administrative support to any and/or all events, programs, logistics, and/or initiatives associated with the Office of Local Affairs
  • Shall oversee agendas for and collaborate in any meeting associated with the Office of Local Affairs, Triton Lobby Corps, and other publicly elected officials
  • Shall maintain a direct relationship with the Associate Vice President, entities in the greater San Diego area as well as institutions of higher education to ensure consistent communication

Director of Political Partnership Program

  • Shall draft and compose a dynamic and hands-on curriculum that is reflective of local, state, and federal government as well as the different function of each entity to increase literacy in civic engagement and democratic process for high school students
  • Shall serve as the direct contact to the UCSD Preuss High School and collaborate with other campus entities including faculty in the Department of Political Science, the Office of External Affairs, SOVAC, and other entities in the greater San Diego area to ensure that the Political Partnership Program is effective in providing an overview of the democratic process
  • Shall facilitate bi-monthly sessions and provide lesson plans to these sessions to maintain the integrity and organization of the Political Partnership Program

Director of Internal Affairs

  • Shall fabricate and maintain a direction relationship with the Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Service, Student Against Mass Incarceration, Office of External Affairs, Movimiento Estudiantíl Chicano de Aztlán, Black Student Union, and other student organizations to address issues facing various constituencies in order to develop programmatic and legislative solutions
  • Shall spearhead oversee any events, programs, collaborations, and/or initiatives associated with UC San Diego, including the Public Service Minor, the Career Services Center, and others to expand opportunities for professional development
  • Shall organize meetings with the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, the Vice Chancellor of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as well as other community centers and campus departments to establish a grant fund to assist in aiding the cotidian life of a student

Director of External Affairs

  • Shall fabricate and maintain a direct relationship with entities in the greater San Diego area, including Native American Reservations, community groups and/or institutions of higher education to address issues facing various constituencies
  • Shall spearhead oversee any events, programs, collaborations, and/or initiatives associated with entities in the greater San Diego area, including and not limited to the Center for Community Solutions, Center for Policy Initiatives, and/or the American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego and Imperial County to develop opportunities for civic engagement
  • Shall connect with and correspond to the San Diego Board of Supervisors and San Diego City Council in order to discuss, provide updates, and further and/or lobby legislation changes that impact students and the greater San Diego area to raise local legislative awareness

Director of Public Relations

  • Shall ensure that any and/or all events, programs, and/or initiatives associated with the Office of Local Affairs are publicized to the UC San Diego community as well as the greater San Diego area
  • Shall create and utilize platforms and projects of social media, including not limited to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to distribute information and develop public releases that reflect the platform of the Office of Local Affairs
  • Shall work closely with Graphic Studios and the Director of Research and Evaluation to compose and drafts any flyers, newsletters, memorandums, and information graphs that reflect the platform and projects of the Office of Local Affairs

Director of Research and Evaluation

  • Shall assist in researching and collecting data that is critical in identifying the issues in the greater San Diego area in order to develop solutions that address those issues
  • Shall work closely with Graphic Studios and the Director of Public Relations to gather information for the use of flyers, newsletters, memorandums, and information graphs that reflect the platform and projects of the Office of Local Affairs
  • Shall analyze any past, current, and future legislation and changes to ensure that the Office of Local Affairs is oriented in terms of political happenings in the greater San Diego area

Interns

  • Provide vital support and assistance to any and all elements of the Office of Local Affairs
