About the Associated Students of UCSD (ASUCSD)

The Associated Students of the University of California, San Diego are the elected and appointed representatives of the UC San Diego student body. The ASUCSD works to promote student engagement through its services and leadership opportunities. The ASUCSD seeks to foster a cohesive community through active interaction and communication with students, the administration, and the greater San Diego Community. Our mission is to facilitate and encourage students to grow and develop through their involvement in student government, its services and auxiliaries. We promote student engagement in all areas of campus life through leadership, advocacy, and service in order to build and strengthen our community.

About the Office of External Affairs: Chief of Staff

The purpose of the ASUCSD External Affairs office shall be to educate the UCSD student body on issues affecting the University at a city, state, and national level; The ASUCSD External Affairs Office shall also advocate for issues regarding higher education and lobby system-wide University officials and local legislators on the UCSD student body’s behalf. In addition, the ASUCSD External Affairs office shall facilitate community relations and educational outreach on behalf of ASUCSD.

Goals and Projects for 2016-17

  • Carry out the campaigns voted upon at the UC Student Association Congress conference in conjunction with the other 18 undergraduate and graduate student associations in UCSA
  • Make UCSD aware of issues affecting the surrounding San Diego community
  • Lobby local, state, and nationwide legislators on issues that impact K-12 and higher education
  • Collaborate with SOVAC on UCSD voter registration and education efforts
  • Organize groups of student leaders to attend conferences such as UCSA Congress, UCSA Students of Color Conference and UCSA Student Lobby Conference
  • Expand the Office of External Affairs through on-campus outreach to cultivate a diversified group of student leaders

Open Staff Positions for the Office of External Affairs: Chief of Staff

Chief of Staff


  • (1) The Chief of Staff shall assist the Vice-President External Affairs.
  • (2) The Chief of Staff shall chair staff meetings.
  • (3) Shall serve as the alternative board member to the University of California Student Association Board in the event that the Vice-President External Affairs, External Affairs Campus Organizing Director, or External Affairs Legislative Liaison cannot attend
  • (4) Shall assist the Vice-President External Affairs in communications with all University of California External Affairs Representatives, University of California Regents, selected members of the California Legislature, US Congress, the Council, student body, faculty, and staff
  • (5) Shall maintain the External Affairs Office’s archives
  • (6) Shall manage all logistical considerations of the External Affairs Office, including but not limited to: (a) Travel accommodation for University of California Student Association and United States Student Association conferences, board meetings, as well as any other External Affairs travel; and (b) Organization of any University of California Student Association and United States Student Association workshops, conferences, and meetings hosted by UCSD.
  • (7)Shall schedule weekly meetings with the Legislative Liaison, Campus Organizing Director, and Interns within the office.
  • (8)Shall work closely with External Affairs over the duration of summer.
  • (9)Shall constantly be up to date with issues of UCSD, ASUCSD, and UCSA by properly delegating these items and updating the office calendar.
  • (10)Maintain records of all ASUCSD External Affairs office co-sponsored events, to be included in the end-of-the-year report.
  • (11)Appointed by the Vice-President External Affairs with the consent of the Council (a) Travel accommodation for University of California Student Association and United States Student Association conferences, board meetings, as well as any other External Affairs travel; and (b) Organization of any University of California Student Association and United States Student Association workshops, conferences, and meetings hosted by UCSD.
